Not overall fussed on the winner to be honest. Making a flimsy metal structure, adding some straw and setting it on fire doesn't really 'do it' for me, but I'm not on the panel of judges I guess, so congratulations.
I didn't attempt an entry, but some of the people who entered showed some great talent.

You should check out his ''work in progress'' gallery in the halloween workshop in nolani.
It's quite a bit more than straw in a metal frame

I really like the winner. Its very creative and I don't agree that its the case of just throwing together a metal frame and some straw and burning it. It takes skill and time to make a useable frame like that, and to photograph it in such a way that it is noticably a charr effigy. Its awesome and congrats.

As if managing the proportions and weight of such a thing isnt hard enough, imagine the timeframe you have to take pictures of the finished structure as it burns away. Taking quality pictures of something burning is also a great challenge, you need to have both the right equipment and some serious photography skills. I don't think I'd ever be able to do such a project the justice Shady has, I'm thoroughly impressed and first place was well deserved.
EDIT: blah, I thought I was posting in the workshop. XD
Grats Malafide too! Awesome piece of animation!!

If I remember correctly, he also had to go through obtaining a fire burning permit!
I think he deserved the first place 100%. Amazing entry and long hours of work went into it. It's very worthy to check out the workshop thread to see his progress!

What Mina said.
Shady definitely earned that top spot with the effigy. It's definitely a lot more than some wimpy frames and cheap straw. A lot of time and effort went into that - the WIP pics show that.
As far as sculptures go, I'd say this is arguably the best one to have placed in the contests so far. It's easily recognizable as a Charr Effigy - unlike the previous year's entry where a large group of people had to stop and ask "what the hell are we looking at?"
